Prologue: Some After-Reading
Impressions of the Book – by Mr. Chen Yun Tao – the Executive Director of the
National SMI Consultative Center, Malaysia
First of all, I should like to give
my hearty thanks to Mr. Li De Min for his kind introduction of Mr. Fu Ce Qin to
me, and his recommendation of this center to have the book “Beholding Chinese
with Your both Eyes“ published in collaboration with Mr. Fu – the book’s
author.
In the past, people usually read
books for “recreation” or “knowing what”, but they do the same now for “knowing
why” or “knowing how” more often than not. The book authored by Mr. Fu had
realized all these four with a unique writing skill that explains the profound
things in a simple way.
For planning this book’s marketing and promotion matters well, I required to
read the book first before having it printed, and I was deeply impressed by
author’s masterly writing skill, its lively contents and the plot arrangement.
个别找到动人的题材不难,但需要把全世界各主要地区的华人和他们的特色一连串地勾划出来,肯定不是一件容易的事;
It is not so difficult to gather a few interesting topics, but to draw the
outline in a series manner of the typical characteristics of Chinese people
living in the major communities in the world was surely not an easy job. …

Singapore also has a social foundation composed of multiple nationalities
wherein the Chinese, the Malaysian and the Indian peoples are the dominant
ethic groups.
Though the Malaysian remains as the official national language, but in fact
English is the most dominant language in the commercial cycle. And in the school
environment, English is also regarded as the most important language.
In the past, Singapore had once disregarded the importance of Chinese language,
but recently the government had changed its educational policy toward language.
In the past, the general level of English in Singapore was obviously superior
to all in Asia, however in the recent years the situation has shown a downslide
degradation influenced by the regionalisation tendency.
The former leader of Singapore Mr. Wu Zuo Dong had once criticized that what
the Singaporean really say was not English but “Singlish”(the English with
Singaporeans characteristic).
Dont
play play、cannotlo 等等。
In the farce play Phua Chu Kang, the comedians talked in “Singlish” such as “Dont play play”、”cannotlo”
etc. so vividly that the audience would burst into cold laughter.
The government was sincerely afraid
that the irregular usage of English would cause a people lost their
competitiveness in respect of language.

The Rice with Coconut Sauce (Nasi Lemak) – a Culture of Multiple Ethic Groups
The main course of Malaysian breakfast is called Nasi Lemak in the aboriginal
language which is a kind of rice and coconut pulp mixture seasoned with hot chilli,
dried fish seeds, cucumber and curry powder. It is a folk style savory food
adored by all three ethnic groups.
Remark: Because of the similar pronunciation and meanings, Nasi
Lemak is also bestowed a nickname that means “the stuff is so hot that it will
kill your mother”.

Beijing Roast Duck – A symbol of culture that shows the peacock’s feather
This is one of the most famous Chinese dishes well known at home and abroad.
The skin of duckling is cooked to a color of golden yellow and is so crisp that
the curious eaters are usually amused with great interest.
Same as the numerous skyscrapers and
good infrastructures that are quickly emerging in China today, the major aim of
the eating is also for the impression and amusement of others with its
distinguished outward appearance.
Many references and depictions are being bestowed on a nation that is getting
stronger with each passing day. Among those are the so-called sayings such as
“an awakening giant”, “a culture with 5000 years’ history”, “Sun Wu’s Military
Art”, “Socialism in 50 years” and the “China Threat”. ……

Each day in the morning when everybody is hurrying to office, the spirit of
tension and struggle of Japanese people have once again demonstrated out.
One would get up at 5 o’clock in the morning, catch up the 6 o’clock metro
train and arrive at company’s coffee house by half past seven where he could enjoy
his breakfast in the remaining half hour.
Somebody would buy a “bento” (a kind of Japanese fast-food box) in the train
and wolf it off (for saving time or money).
I had also tried to have my breakfast in the metro carriage.
─
站着看报纸,(一手夹着公文包,一手握报纸);
When sitting in the commuting metro train, Japanese show their “18 kinds of
martial skills” (a saying of a Chinese metaphor meaning that one is versatile).
For example, they can read newspapers when they are standing on their feet
(hold the papers with both hands while clamping their portfolios under their
armpits).
也有站时着睡觉的“武林高手”,到站时,他们自动醒来;
Sometimes they have become the master-hands of Chinese “Kung Fu” who can sleep
on their feet and wake up by the instinct before the metro arrives at their
destination.
Of course, there are also a few
“traitors of the martial school” who would practice their skill of “snake
hands” to take liberties with ladies. It is no wonder why the breasts of all
Japanese women are so flat that they promise little generosity.
